Organ Donation
In New York State, approximately 8,000 people are waiting for livers, hearts, kidneys, lungs and various combinations of two or more organs to become available for transplant. Increasing awareness of the need for organ donors is a high priority issue of the Medical Society of the State of New York. The following is designed to provide physicians and patients with information about organ donation, how to approach families and alleviate misconceptions that prevent individuals from making informed decisions about donation, and resources available to assist in this effort.

United Network for Organ Sharing
(UNOS), the organization that currently manages the organ allocation system for the U.S. government, offers national database information on this website. Individuals can conduct a search by organ type, geographic region and individual hospital and can access data and statistics on the nation’s transplant program.

Provides information about donation and transplantation to the general public in order to improve organ and tissue procurement efforts worldwide; offers transplant patients and families world wide with information specifically dealing with transplant-related issues and concerns and features an index of sources for transplant-related information available through the internet and otherwise.
National Foundation for Transplants
Organ and bone marrow transplant patients nationwide turn to National Foundation for Transplants when they need help in
raising funds for transplant costs not covered by insurance. National Foundation for Transplants provides fundraising assistance and a lifetime commitment of advocacy on behalf of the patient.
Upstate New York Transplant Services, Inc., New York:
An independent, nonprofit organization designated by the federal government to accept anatomical gifts for transplantation and /or medical research.
Eye Bank Association of America
Not-for-profit organization of eye banks dedicated to the restoration of sight through the promotion and advancement of eye banking.
