STATEMENT BY MSSNY PRESIDENT DR. THOMAS MADEJSKI
IN RESPONSE TO CHILDREN BEING SEPARATED FROM THEIR PARENTS AT OUR BORDERS

"It is imperative for our leaders to work together to address the heartbreaking saga whereby the children of border detainees are being separated from their parents.  This situation is a threat to the long-term health of these children.

Although we recognize the need to assure safe borders, the forced separation of children from their parents or other adult caregivers poses a great risk to these children. The American Psychiatric Association has warned that these separated children are at high risk of developing depression, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, they are at higher risk for long-term medical and mental health problems as a result of these forced separations.

It’s time to put people before politics.

These children and families should be afforded due process and remain together while they seek asylum. We urge our leaders in the nation's Capitol to put aside partisan differences and work together to assure the immediate cessation of this practice.

Affected families should be reunited immediately.
