Psychiatrist Hiring Key to Adequate Inpatient Mental Health Beds

While mental health care providers applauded the state’s $118 million 2024-25 budget allocation to fund a range of mental health services, progress toward meeting the growing demand for care has been slow. Psychiatrist Dr. Leslie Marino, a member of MSSNY and president of the Suffolk County Medical Society, points out that adding inpatient beds has stalled due to difficulties hiring psychiatrists, noting that “Long Island has a high cost of living, but psychiatrists in the public sector tend to have lower salaries. From what I’ve heard from a lot of inpatient facilities, [the holdup] is recruiting doctors.”
