New FCC Rules Make Texting Even More Valuable for Practices

Physician practices are facing challenges in engaging with patients due to the decline in response rates to phone calls and emails, which are often associated with spam and scams. However, the increasing reliance on text messaging has proven to be a more effective communication method. In March, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implemented rules to combat scam texting, requiring mobile service providers to block illegal messages, filter out illegitimate sources, and establish contact points for inquiries. The FCC’s dedication to reducing spam texts is encouraging for practices utilizing or considering text messaging as a communication channel. As spam texts decline, patient trust in texting will rise, leading to higher engagement and faster response times. When selecting a text messaging platform, healthcare practices should prioritize security, tier 1 connectivity, two-way texting capabilities, integration with existing systems, and multiple texting solutions. The ability to send messages consistently from a single number, flexibility in message delivery, and proficiency with hyperlinks are also essential. The FCC’s regulations and commitment to combating spam texts will solidify texting as a crucial component of healthcare communications.
