Increase in Human Parvovirus B19 Activity in the United States

The CDC has issued an alert about a rise in human parvovirus B19 activity in the U.S. Parvovirus B19, a seasonal respiratory virus, has seen a notable increase in test positivity and reported complications, especially among pregnant individuals and those with sickle cell disease.
In June 2024, the prevalence of recent infections rose significantly, particularly among children aged 5-9. Physicians should have a heightened awareness of parvovirus B19 symptoms and prioritize testing in high-risk patients.
